
Three cheers for the Bowie Blue Jays 14U travel softball team, which placed first in the 2013Β United States Specialty Sports AssociationΒ Fall Brawl tournament in Ellicott City Sept. 28 and 29.Β
The Blue Jays bested 23 other teams, from areas including New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.Β
The team's defensive efforts were led by pitcher AkirraΒ Pullen, who's sister, Alleshia Pullen was catching and calling pitches behind the plate. Pullen gave up 11 runs during the two-day tournament. In addition,Β outfielder Alexis Flores, shortstop Kirbbe Johnson andΒ Ciara McDowell all making solid efforts and plays, according to team parentΒ Chris Ignaczak.
The Blue Jays also scored 64 runs during the tournament, with notable performances at the plate by JennaΒ Haefel, Audriauna Ignaczak andΒ RaeΒ Wynter. Akirra also nailed a home run that clinched the team's spot in the semifinals, reported Chris Iganczak.
On Oct. 13, the Blue Jays will participate in the USSAA Save Second Base for Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament at North Laurel Park, located at 9250Β North Laurel Rd. in Laurel. The team welcomes local support.Β
