Bowie High School PTSO hosts workshop on Internet Safety

Technology and the internet are part of everyday life. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are especially prominent in the lives of adolescents where they communicate with friends and even more importantly express themselves and find information.

Widespread and improved mobile device use means teens can access social media more easily. According to a Pew survey conducted in 2014 and 2015, 94 percent of teens who go online using a mobile device do so daily. 71 percent of teens reported using multiple social media sites and nearly all share their full name, school name, birthday, photos of themselves and the city where they live. In a separate survey, nearly half of the teens reported using social media sites to express romantic interest in someone. Teens on social media are also at risk for cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content or predators, and having their private information shared publicly.

The Bowie High School PTSO is committed to providing workshops of value to parents and students of all ages. We hope that you will join us on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 7pm in the Bowie High School cafeteria for a special presentation on social media and internet safety. Keynote speakers include the Family Online Safety Institute, representatives from the State's Attorney's Office and the Maryland State Police Department (Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force).
