Bowie Hosting MLK Art Contest

As a way of honoring the life and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and raising awareness about his work, the city of Bowie will be holding and art contest for local students.

Sponsored by the city’s Diversity Committee, children in grades kindergarten through 12 enrolled in an eligible school in Bowie are eligible to enter the contest. The city is holding three separate contests for three age groups—a coloring contest for children in grades K-2, a poster contest for children in grades 3-5 and a video contest for children in grades 6-12.

Children eligible for the coloring contest will have to color the picture selected by the city, which can be found here, and will be judged based on “overall appearance of the work, neatness, and use of color.” The entire picture should be colored, according to the rules.

Those eligible for the poster contest should submit an entry following the theme “Moving Forward with Dr. King’s Dream” on : 8 1/2” x 11” up to 12” x 18” paper. Crayons, markers, paints, pencils, ink or similar mediums are acceptable. Collages are not permitted. See the full rules and guidelines for the poster contest here.

For the video contest, entrants should submit a video no longer than 90 seconds following the theme “Moving Forward with Dr. King’s Dream.” All videos much contain original footage and “can include any combination of people, places, items, situations, photos, drawings, collages, poetry readings, spoken word, dance, music, or songs.” More information on the video contest can be found here.

All entries must be submitted to City Hall by the close of business on Jan. 9, 2013. Winners in each category will be awarded $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.
