Cat Causes House Fire, $50K in Damage: Officials

Prince George's County Fire officials say a cat knocked over a candle that caused a fire and serious damage to a house.

A forgiving homeowner still has a cat – even though the furry roommate sparked a fire that caused an estimated $50,000 damage to a Suitland home.

Firefighters were called just before 8 a.m. Monday to a house fire in the 2100 block of DuPont Avenue, says Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, but two adults living in the home were displaced, Brady says.

The fire’s cause was ruled accidental. Authorities said the family cat knocked over candle, which landed on a mattress and started the blaze.

Brady says the cat survived the fire and remains with its owner.
