Celebrate MLK Jr. Day This Weekend, Monday With Service Projects, Events

Engage in community service projects and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy this weekend and Monday in Prince George's County.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD β€” There are numerous ways to recognize and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy this weekend and on Monday, the official federal day of observance.

Join Prince George's County Council Member Edward Burroughs III for a day of King during The Denney House MLK Day of Service Community Clean Up event Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Division VII Police Station, 11108 Fort Washington Rd., Fort Washington. Register here.

Councilmember Wala Blegay-District 6 is hosting a community service event Jan. 16 collecting towelettes for people in need. The items can be donated in-person or donated via Amazon. On Jan. 16, participants can drop off items at Starbucks in Largo. Items will go to the Promise Place Men's Shelter. A list of items can be found here.

The First Baptist Church of Glenarden's day of service will be Jan. 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. The volunteer initiative β€œCultivating a Beloved Community Mindset” invites everyone to show up and receive the required supplies to complete a service project. The Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. PrΔ±nce George’s County Chapter along with the Top Teens of America - PrΔ±nce George's County Chapter will host a Pink and Blue Day of Service community toiletry collection Jan. 22. Teaming up with them will be the Junior League of Prince George's County and Delta Psi Epsilon Christian Sorority. The toiletries donated between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. will be donated to senior living facilities, toiletry pantries an other local nonprofits.

City of College Park's 2023 Tribute to Dr. King will be the Urgency of Now: One Community, One Love. Join panelists Jan. 16 for a discussion about King's teachings and legacy from 7 to 8 p.m. on Zoom at https://zoom.us/j/98187966180. Registration is free. RSVP here.

Alpha Alpha Sigma Omega will honor King's legacy and support two schools in District 9 (Prince George's County) Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. starting at Clinton Baptist Church, 8701 Woodyard Rd., Clinton.
