Child Killed When Motorcycle Crashes into Group of Pedestrians

Emergency crews say children ages 6 and 9 suffered the most serious injuries. It's unknown which child died or what caused the crash.

A child standing on a sidewalk across from Prince George’s Plaza Mall in Hyattsville was killed when a motorcycle struck a group of people, authorities say.

The accident was reported about 4:15 p.m. Saturday in the 3500 block of East West Highway in Hyattsville, according to Prince George’s County Police.

The motorcycle was westbound on the highway approaching the mall’s entrance when it collided with a four-door sedan, police say.

Witnesses told FOX DC that when the motorcycle hit the car, it then went flying across the intersection and struck a group of pedestrians standing on the sidewalk across from the mall. The driver was also thrown from the bike.

Police say two adults and one child were struck by the careening motorcycle. All three victims were taken to local hospitals, where child was pronounced dead.

A fire department spokesman said the most critically injured victims were children believed to be 6 and 9 year old. Several other people suffered serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, and were taken to hospitals.

Roads remain closed between East-West Highway and Belcrest Road and Toledo as of about 6 p.m., authorities said.
