Clinton Man Killed In Police-Involved Shooting In Charles County

Prosecutors said the man was armed with a machete before he was shot by Charles County officers.

CHARLES COUNTY, MD — A Clinton man was killed Wednesday in a police-involved shooting in Charles County, according to the Maryland Attorney General's Office.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday as Charles County Sheriff's Office officers were attempting to serve an arrest warrant to 36-year-old Demarcus Irish at a residence in the 10000 block of Cobbler Place in White Plains.

When officers approached Irish, prosecutors said he took out a machete and raised it above his head while facing them. Two officers fired their guns in response, striking Irish.

Officers rendered medical aid until emergency medical services arrived, prosecutors said, but Irish was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers recovered a machete near the man, according to prosecutors. No officers were injured during the incident.

The involved officers were later identified as Sgt. Andrew Coulby, a 12-year veteran, and Police Officer First Class Brennan Kunz, a 15-year veteran. Both officers are assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit.

The officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident. The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General generally releases body-worn camera footage within 20 business days of an incident.
