An off-duty Prince George's County Sheriff's deputy discharged his weapon in connection with an early morning auto theft in Bowie.
BOWIE, MD -- The Prince George's Police Department is conducting an investigation into a deputy-involved shooting that took place early Wednesday morning in Bowie. The Prince George's County Sheriff's deputy was off-duty at the time of the incident.
On Wednesday, Feb. 12, around 1:30 a.m., the Bowie Police Department received a report of three suspects pulling on vehicle door handles in the 14800 block of Dunleigh Drive. Units arrived on the scene and, after a brief foot chase, officers apprehended two suspects, according to Bowie Police Chief John Nesky.
The third suspect, described as a black male with dreadlocks wearing a silver coat, escaped. A short time later, BPD received a report of someone matching that description stealing a blue Jeep Compass in the area.

The Prince George's County Police Department is investigating the off-duty deputy's discharge of a weapon, according to Sharon Taylor, director of communications at the Office of the Sheriff. The deputy has been placed on routine administrative duty status.
"That means he's be back at work, but his policing powers will be suspended until the investigation is complete," Taylor said, adding there will be no investigation by the Office of the Sheriff until PGPD finishes its investigation.
The two suspects apprehended by Bowie Police were handed over to PGPD, who will be handling the charges from there.
