Driver Eludes DUI Checkpoint; Bowie Couple Hurt in Crash: Police

A Baltimore man faces charges after leading police on a chase through parts of AA county and crashing into Annapolis and Bowie drivers.

A Baltimore driver who allegedly fled a St. Patrick’s Day drunk-driving checkpoint in Annapolis led police on a 15-minute chase across parts of Anne Arundel County before plowing into other cars in front of Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.

There were no serious injuries in the melee.

Officers at the checkpoint saw a 2008 Honda Accord northbound on Rowe Boulevard driving erratically about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The car reportedly swerved onto U.S. 50 eastbound after almost striking the checkpoint at Bestgate Road. Police in a marked patrol car caught up to the vehicle and tried to stop it when the suspect accelerated and fled.

The driver – later identified as Marvis Montrell Pollock, 34, of Baltimore -- was pursued through the Arnold area and Anne Arundel Community College until a police helicopter began tracking the suspect and police vehicles dropped back.

Pollock, still driving erratically, returned to Rowe Boulevard eastbound and plowed into three vehicles stopped at the red light near the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium on Rowe. Police say the impact disabled Pollock’s car, which caught fire. At that point he was arrested without further incident; he was not injured.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and took three occupants to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police say Pollock did not have a driver’s license and was under the influence of a controlled substance.

After consulting with States Attorney’s office, Pollock was charged with four counts of assault for the four occupants struck, driving while impaired, fleeing and eluding by motor vehicle, and numerous related traffic charges.

Other vehicles involved in the crash and those injured are:

  • 2011 Hyundai Accent, driven by Meghan McCarthy, 30, of Annapolis, she was not injured
  • 2014 Mercedes CLS550, driven by Jane Jiau, 55, of Annapolis, she had minor injuries
  • 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by Tiffany Capers, 29, and a passenger, Andrew Peresto, 29, both of Bowie, both suffered minor injuries
