Off-Duty Security Guard Shot At Skate Rink: Prince George's Police

An off-duty security guard and father of five was shot outside a recently renovated skate rink in Temple Hills.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — An off-duty security guard was fatally shot late Thursday night outside the skating rink where he worked. The rink was open for an adult skate night Thursday.

Eugene Smith, 31, of Washington, D.C., worked as a security guard at the DMV All Skate Social on Branch Avenue in Temple Hills. He was off-duty at the time of the shooting and had stopped by to pick up his check, reported WTOP.

Prince George's County Police noted Friday that no arrests have been made and it's unclear whether or not Smith was targeted. They believe the suspect may have been in a silver sedan and a reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest.

Owner Jacqueline Wiggins had bought and renovated the rink recently, and told NBC4 she had hoped to create a safe space in the community. She shared that Smith was a father of five.

"This is a guy that works in the community six days a week, and then comes here. This guy is not just some regular person. This guy is boots on the ground in the community every day just trying to help ... I did everything that we could do to make this place a safe haven, and I stand on that, and I will continue to put in more security measures," Wiggins said. "But when they kill your head of security, how much can you do?"
