The man was the Rev. Don Speed Smith Goodloe. In 1906, he was the first African American graduate of Meadville Theological School, a Unitarian seminary. Rev. Goodloe was also the first principal of the Bowie Normal School in 1911. Over the years, the Bowie Normal School became Bowie State University. During his tenure at BSU, Goodloe established the first summer session, increased student enrollment and faculty, established renovations for the men's living quarters and a new women's dormitory, and created a model elementary school for student teachers.
