Fatal Motorcycle Crash Shuts Down Westbound Route 50 in Bowie for 2 Hours

Police say the motorcyclist was thrown off the bike after colliding with a pickup truck in the HOV lane.

BOWIE, MD — Another fatal crash in Bowie has resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, according to the Maryland State Police. Police say a motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on westbound Route 50 at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, throwing the rider from the motorcycle and shutting down the westbound lanes of the highway for two hours.

The rider, a man from Virginia who was not identified pending notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was riding a 2015 Kawasaki 636 motorcycle on Route 50 west of Church Road when "he struck a GMC pickup truck traveling in the HOV lane," the police report states.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Prince George's Hospital with minor injuries. Police do not think alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

The crash resulted in the closure of westbound Route 50 for about two hours.

It's the second time this month that a motorcyclist has died in a collision with a vehicle in Bowie. A wreck at the intersection of Crain Highway and Sylvan Drive resulted in the death of motorcyclist 25-year-old Garbiel John Gales on Aug. 3.
