Former Trump, Obama Official Dies Days After Being Shot In Crime Spree: Police
Mike Gill, a former Trump administration official, died days after being shot during one man's rampage, Prince George's County Police say.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Michael Gill, a married father of three from Prince George's County and head of a federal agency in two presidential administrations, was waiting to pick up his wife near Mount Vernon Square in Washington, D.C., Jan. 29 when he was fatally shot, authorities said.
The attack on Gill was part of a string of violent acts police say were committed by 28-year-old Artell Cunningham. While Cunningham was shot and killed by police, Gill survived the shooting initially, but died from his injuries Feb. 3.
Gill, 56, of Suitland, became the second man to die in the 11-hour crime spree, officials said. Gill is survived by his wife, Kristina, and three children, Sean, Brian and Annika.

Police say Cunningham was a Suitland resident who had a minor criminal history in both the District and in Maryland. They also said he suffered from mental health issues.
In a statement released Saturday, Kristina Gill remembered how her husband's “heart was evident in everything he did,” both in his personal and professional life. He coached his daughter’s soccer team, served at Holy Trinity Parish and “relished opening our home to friends and colleagues to bring people together. Friends of Mike's knew they could always count on him to help solve a problem. He was in his element pouring a friend a drink and sharing a good story to give a laugh.”

Michael Gill served as chief operating officer of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and was chief of staff to former Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo, who told NBC Washington last week that Gill was a man with a wit and special human touch.
Michael Gill served under the Trump and Obama administrations.
“In our time at the Commission, if we achieved anything, 95 percent of the credit goes to Mike Gill, who’s a person that never sought credit, who never sought anything for himself,” Giancarlo said. He said Gill was highly respected by his peers and officials he encountered all over the world.
Michael Gill also worked with the Housing Policy Council for several years, the organization's president Ed DeMarco said in a statement.
"His HPC colleagues mourn his loss. We admired Mike personally and professionally; he was an outstanding lawyer, public servant, colleague and community member, giving his time and talent in service to his country, his city, his church and his community," DeMarco's statement said in part.
According to police, officers received a report of a shooting in the 900 block of K Street Northwest around 5:45 p.m. Jan. 29. The suspect, identified later as Cunningham, got into Gill's parked vehicle, which was parked at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and shot him, then fled. Gill climbed out of the vehicle and collapsed on the sidewalk, where his wife, Kristina Gill, found him. Gill was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
Then just after 7 p.m. that same day, Cunningham attempted to steal a vehicle in the 1000 block of 3rd Street Northwest, according to police. He fled the scene and stole another man’s vehicle before fatally shooting him in the 1200 block of 3rd Street Northeast around 15 minutes later outside several luxury apartment buildings not far from Florida Avenue.
The owner, later identified as 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez, a father of two young girls, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Though Vasquez gave him the keys, Cunningham still shot him in front of his girlfriend, according to reports. Cunningham then dumped the stolen vehicle in Prince George’s County before stealing another vehicle — a Nissan Rogue, D.C. police said.
At around 3 a.m. Jan. 30, Cunningham drove past a Washington, D.C., police cruiser on Interstate 295 near the 1st Street exit in the stolen Nissan Rogue, police say. Cunningham fired at the police cruiser, hitting the drivers side door. The officer wasn’t injured. Cunningham was confronted in Prince George’s County and fatally shot by an officer with the New Carrollton department around two hours later, police said.
