2 Girl Scouts Collected 100+ Costumes So Others Could Trick-Or-Treat

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Thanks to two young girls' thoughtfulness and spirit of volunteerism, Halloween became a bit more fun for Bowie area kids who couldn't afford a costume and wouldn't be able to go trick-or-treating.

Katie Greer, 10, and Molly Thorpe, 9, are both Girl Scout Juniors from Troop 22023 in Bowie. The Scouts decided to launch a Halloween costume donation drive to help families in the community who were too pinched financially to purchase a costume for their own kiddos.

In the end, the girls collected more than 145 costumes and more than 50 accessories that they distributed one Saturday morning in the community. They also collected nonperishable food items for the Bowie Food Pantry and pet items for Bowie CLAW.

Jaime Thorpe, the girls' co-leader of Troop 22023, told Patch she was "incredibly proud of the work these two have done."

Molly shared with Patch that Halloween is her favorite holiday and she didn't want the high cost of a Halloween costume preventing anyone from celebrating. She added that it felt great to help other kids have a happy Halloween.

The girls placed decorated donation boxes at various locations around town, then gathered up the donated costumes, sorted and organized everything by size. They even repaired rips and tears.

Then they set up a distribution event to pass out the costumes and contacted a social worker to deliver costumes to other families who couldn't attend. Katie said she loved helping people shop at their pop-up stand full of donated costumes.

Thanks to their hard work, the girls earned a bronze award, which is the highest achievement a Girl Scout Junior can earn.
