Greenbelt Man Throws TV at Cop, Climbs Into Movie Theater's Ceiling: Police

A truly insane day for Prince George's County Police ended with the arrest of a man on 12 charges.

GREENBELT, MD — A Greenbelt man faces a dozen charges after police say he burglarized a home in Laurel, threw a TV at an officer in Greenbelt, and then dashed across the street into a movie theater and hid in the ceiling. And it all started because a circling police helicopter caught him breaking into a home.

Police say that at around 2:30 p.m. on March 7, a Prince George's County Police Department Air 1 helicopter recorded the suspect breaking into a home in Laurel (the footage is embedded below).

The footage reportedly shows 26-year-old Sherrod Weaver driving an SUV onto the grass behind a row of townhomes before breaking into one of them and stealing several items, and then driving away, according to a report from the Prince George's County Police Department.

"Officers then continued their surveillance on the suspect before trying to arrest him on Cherrywood Terrace," the report states. "During that arrest attempt, the suspect threw a large, stolen TV at an officer, knocking the officer to the ground."

The report says Weaver then ran across the street in a movie theater on Greenbelt Road. He climbed the scaffolding behind a movie screen into the ceiling, and as he moved around trying to figure out how to escape, several ceiling tiles fell into the theater, which was empty at the time.

Multiple officers were inside the theater at the time, along with the fire department. Weaver finally surrendered after three hours.

The officer that was struck with the TV had minor injuries, and Weaver faces a charge of assault on an officer for that incident, police say.

Weaver faces 12 charges including burglary, second degree assault on a law enforcement officer, theft, destruction of property, and vandalism. He is in jail on $100,000 bond. He also had two open warrants for violation of probation relatedd to previous convictions for burglary, the report states.
