Grocery Wholesaler Eyes 700 Job Cuts in County

C&S Wholesale Grocers plans to close distribution centers in Upper Marlboro and Landover by next year.

Seven hundred employees of a grocery wholesale chain located in Prince George’s County could lose their jobs over the next year, according to reports.

C&S Wholesale Grocers is closing a grocery distribution center at 16020 Leeland Road in Upper Marlboro and a general merchandise distribution center in Landover, reports the Washington Business Journal.

Shutting down the two sites run by Collington Services will occur into 2016, a company spokesman told the Business Journal. Some employees will be eligible to apply for jobs at C&S facilities in Maryland and Pennsylvania. How many of the 700 positions will be eliminated by the end of the shutdown is unclear.

A notice filed by the corporation with the state of Maryland said 191 positions would be cut beginning Dec. 5, the Business Journal says.

C&S, based in Keene, NH, is the country’s largest wholesale grocery supply company with regional distribution centers where it receives products from food and grocery companies and ships them to supermarkets and stores, according to its website.

The company serves about 5,000 stores from more than 50 locations in 15 states. C&S supplies goods to Safeway, Target, Giant and other chains.
