Judge Delays Trial In Alleged Hate Crime Murder At UMD: Report

UMD student Sean Urbanski, 22, is accused of killing a Bowie State student in a racially motivated attack.

A judge has granted a delay in the trial of a former University of Maryland student charged with the fatal stabbing of a Bowie State University student in what prosecutors say was a racially motivated attack, according to a report.

The Baltimore Sun reports that a judge in Prince George's County delayed the trial by six months until January 2019. Sean Urbanski, 22, is accused of killing Army 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III, 23.

Urbanski's attorneys reportedly say they need more time to review the evidence in the case.

Collins, who is black, was visiting friends at College Park in May 2017 when Urbanski, a white student at the University of Maryland who may have been intoxicated at the time, allegedly attacked Collins when he wouldn't move over for him. The FBI reportedly discovered that Urbanski belonged to a racist Facebook group called Alt Reich: Nation, leading to hate crime charges.

Earlier this year, WTOP reported that lawyers for Urbanski told the judge in a motion that they believe Prince George's County prosecutors will try to introduce images and messages from his phone linking him to the now-deleted Alt Reich: Nation Facebook page.

The lawyers, William Brennan and John McKenna, want the images and Facebook page barred from the court because they are "particularly offensive, extremely prejudicial, highly inflammatory, irrelevant, and not otherwise admissable," according to WTOP.

His lawyers argue that alcohol and substance abuse were to blame. Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence with no chance of parole.
