Local Teen Heads to Junior Fencing Championships

After a stellar fall in which she took home national and international gold medals, Bowie teen Amanda Sirico earned another gold medal at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in February, and with it a spot on the U.S. Junior & Cadet World Fencing Championship team.

, after her impressive wins at the North American Cup, she said her next goal was to qualify for the Junior Fencing World Championships, and she did that soundly with her most recent win.

Sirico, who fences with the DC Fencers Club, was also named the 2013 Junior Fencing Champion in the Junior Women’s Epee Event. This marks Sirico’s second Junior Olympic Championship title—she won gold in the Cadet Women’s Epee event in 2012.

Now ranked the No. 1 Cadet Women’s Epee fencer in the United States, Sirico earned a slot on the U.S. team, according to a statement. The Junior Fencing World Championships will be held in Porec, Croatia in April.

According to the DC Fencers Club, other notable wins by Sirico this season include Silver, Junior Women’s Epee, in Goteberg Sweden; Gold, Cadet Epee European Cup, in Grenoble, France; and Silver, Cadet Epee European Cup in Klagenfurt, Austria.
