Man Sentenced In Fatal Shooting Of Woman Reading Bible In Her Kitchen: Prosecutor

A man arguing with another over a car sale has been sentenced in the shooting of the man's mom who was reading her Bible in her kitchen.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A 27-year-old man has been sentenced in the fatal shooting of a 56-year-old woman who was sitting in her kitchen New Year's Day 2020 while reading her Bible in her kitchen.

On Jan. 1, 2020, Sammie Warren went to Filomena Vasquez's home where she was preparing for a sermon on the radio. Warren and Vasquez's son had argued previously about a car Warren bought from him a week before the shooting that stopped working within 12 hours of the purchase, according to the Prince George's Office of the State's Attorney. Vasquez's son refused to refund the money and Warren started making threats, court documents showed.

"No one anticipates that a quiet New Year's Day at home could tragically end in loss of life," said State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy. "Ms. Vazquez was in the privacy of her home, simply reading her Bible when this happened, which is heartbreaking."

"He went to Filomena's house and shot it up over a car," added Assistant State's Attorney Brenna Bush. "This is the type of gun wielding, emotional person the defendant is. He goes from zero to one hundred using deadly violence."

Warren has been sentenced to 30 years for second-degree murder, 15 years for use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and five years for illegal possession of a regulated firearm.
