Man's Body Found Hanging From A Tree In Upper Marlboro: Prince George's Police

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A man was found hanging from tree outside a business located in the 9300 block of D'Arcy Road in Upper Marlboro early Sunday morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prince George's County police detectives and evidence technicians were called to the area around 7:44 a.m. Detectives spoke with witnesses and examined evidence at the site. The medical examiner took the body for an autopsy, according to the police department.

On Monday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore notified the Prince George’s County Police Department of its independent findings in this case. The OCME ruled the man died of suicide by hanging with no other signs of trauma to his body.

No evidence of foul play has been discovered at this time. This remains an open case and detectives will continue to investigate.

"We understand this incident is both disturbing and painful to residents who may have driven by the scene or learned about this incident throughout the day," the police department stated. "We know this investigation remains a concern for many in the community. Even after today’s suicide ruling by the OCME, the PGPD is continuing to investigate, to include examining evidence and speaking to those who knew the decedent to get a full picture of the circumstances of this case. At this time, there is no indication of any foul play and investigators continue to believe this was a tragic suicide."

Prince George's County Executive Aisha Braveboy and Police Chief George Nader met with the community Sunday afternoon to address concerns, answer questions and provide details on resources available to those experiencing mental health issues.

"I can tell you that waking up to this news, it was devastating. It was triggering for me, and it was also really saddening and as the information surrounding what occurred began to be revealed," Braveboy said. "I was really heartbroken for the individual."

Wala Blegay, Prince George's County Council member at-large, said Monday in an email that she was "deeply saddened and disturbed" by the incident.

"My heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and everyone in our community who has been impacted by this heartbreaking loss. I also recognize how deeply painful and disturbing the circumstances of this death are, particularly for members of our Black community. The image of a Black man hanging from a tree carries a painful history in this country, and I understand the fear, concern, and questions this incident has raised," Blegay stated.
