Maryland AG Investigating Fatal Police Shooting In Prince George's County

FORT WASHINGTON, MD — The Maryland attorney general's office is investigating a fatal police shooting that occurred Friday in Prince George's County.

Officers with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George's County Police Department and U.S. Park Police responded to Fort Washington Park shortly after 6 p.m. Friday for a report of a shooting and a man walking near the river with a gun, Attorney General Anthony Brown said in a statement.

Investigators said a National Capital Park Police officer encountered the man near the river. During the encounter, the officer fired his service weapon, striking the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said officers recovered a gun near him.

No officers were injured. U.S. Park Police officers arrived shortly after the shooting to assist.

The Independent Investigations Division is asking anyone with information, including cellphone or private surveillance video, to contact investigators at 410-576-7070 or IID@oag.maryland.gov.

Under the division's policies, the identities of the deceased person and the involved officer are generally released within two business days, while body-worn camera footage is typically released within 20 business days; however, the timelines may be extended if necessary.
