No City of Bowie July 4 Fireworks Planned; Where To Go Instead

The city of Bowie will not hold July 4 fireworks; officials have a list of area attractions where residents might celebrate the holiday.

BOWIE, MD — For the third straight year, no city-sponsored Fourth of July fireworks display is planned in Bowie. Instead, residents can attend the Bowie Baysox game on July 4, which includes a Red, White and Boom All-American Independence Day Celebration at Prince George's Stadium, or visit Six Flags American in Upper Marlboro.

In 2015, city officials said a deal with the Bowie Baysox organization to allow July 4 fireworks sponsored by the city fell apart, ending a tradition of more than 40 years. A city spokesperson told Bowie Patch then that, “we tried to work it out with the Baysox, but to no avail, so unfortunately if folks want to see fireworks in Bowie, they will have to go to the Baysox or to Six Flags.”

Baysox Independence Day Celebration

  • City of Laurel Independence Day Celebration. All events will be held on Saturday, July 1. It starts with a parade at 11 a.m., followed by an Antique Car Show on Mulberry Street at Laurel Lakes. Family fun games will run from 3 to 5 pm with a hot dog-eating contest at 4 pm and music from the stage starting at 5:15 pm. Food vendors will set up on the hill above Laurel Lakes. It all culminates with a fireworks show starting at dusk (9:15pm). Rain date for the fireworks only is Sunday, July 2. Organizers are accepting donations, since it is an all-volunteer organization that raises money throughout the year to put on the event. There is still time to sign up for the parade.   • College Park - University of Maryland, College Park. Parking Lot 1, off Campus Drive near the University Boulevard/Adelphi Road entrance. (301) 864-8877. Food and music start at 7 p.m., with fireworks around 9 p.m. Grass seating is limited, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Concessions will offer hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, ice cream, snow cones, soda and bottled water. Personal coolers are allowed. Alcohol and personal fireworks are prohibited on campus.
  • Greenbelt - Buddy Attick Park, 555 Crescent Rd., Greenbelt. Entertainment begins at 4 p.m. Fireworks at dusk. Call Weather Hotline for event updates: 301-474-0646.
  • Six Flags America - Mitchellville. (301) 249-1500. The amusement park sponsors a fireworks display for July 4th Fest for pass holders, with fireworks and live entertainment every night. The park will have fireworks and live entertainment every night July 2-4. The theme park is open those days from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Hurricane Harbor is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the pool decks and midways remaining open from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for the patriotic celebration each night.

The National Weather Service calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Look for mostly cloudy skies with a high near 93. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent. The chance of scattered rain showers before 2 am creeps up to 50 percent. Skies tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Bowie Baysox Event

Spend the July 4th holiday at the Bowie Baysox! The team has 100 tickets available for a luxury suite seat that will allow you to sit on the balcony seating level of the Diamond View Restaurant located on the stadium's Luxury Suite level directly behind home plate. You will also have access to the indoor, climate controlled seating inside the restaurant to enjoy the game and the post-game fireworks show.

The luxury suite tickets are only available until 5:00 pm on Friday, June 30, or until they are sold out. They can be ordered in advance on www.baysoxshop.com. Single game tickets are now on sale at www.baysox.com.

There is no food or beverages included in this seating option for the July 4 game. Food and beverages will be available to purchase from the a-la-carte menu. You must have a ticket to the Diamond View Restaurant to access this special seating area for the July 4th game. These tickets will not be available for purchase on the game date.

You must purchase a ticket to enter the stadium for the Baysox game and post-game July 4th fireworks.
