Officer, Fatally Shot Man Identified In Fort Washington Incident

FORT WASHINGTON, MD — A police officer and a fatally shot man have been identified by the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.

Officers with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George's County Police Department and U.S. Park Police were called to Fort Washington Park shortly after 6 p.m. July 31 for a report of a shooting and a man walking near the river with a gun, Attorney General Anthony Brown said in a statement.

Investigators said a National Capital Park Police officer encountered the man near the river. During the encounter, the officer fired his service weapon, hitting the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said officers recovered a gun near him. No officers were injured. U.S. Park Police officers arrived shortly after the shooting to assist with the investigation.

The IID identified the man as 30-year-old Alex Charles of Fort Washington.

The involved MNCPP officer has been identified as Corporal Anthony Delozier, a 15-year veteran of the department with 24 years of prior service. Delozier is assigned to field operations.

The IID continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal police-involved shooting.
