Overnight Curfew For Youth Enacted In Laurel

LAUREL, MD — A temporary citywide curfew for all youth younger than 18 will take effect June 18.

The curfew runs all summer long, from June 18 through Sept. 8.

According to the executive order signed by Mayor Keith Sydnor, it will be "unlawful for any person under the age of 18 to be or remain in any public place within the city of Laurel between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., seven days a week."

"The curfew is intended to promote public safety and support the city’s ongoing efforts to provide positive opportunities and a safe environment for young people throughout the summer months," the city stated.

The curfew does not apply when a juvenile is:

• Accompanied by a parent or legal guardian;
• Returning home by a direct route within one hour following the conclusion of a school activity, religious or voluntary association activity, or a public entertainment event; or
• Traveling directly to or from work and able to provide proof of employment upon request

"Summer should be a time for young people to enjoy recreational programs, community events and opportunities that foster growth and success," Sydnor said. "This curfew is one part of a broader effort to keep our youth safe, strengthen families and ensure our community remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone."

The Laurel Police Department will enforce the curfew in accordance with city law and established procedures.

Officers can issue a Youth Field Contact Report (J-2) and notify parents or guardians, consistent with Section 9-63 of the Laurel City Code. Following the detention of a juvenile for a curfew violation, a parent or guardian will be notified and required to respond immediately to the designated location to assume custody of the youth in violation of the curfew.
