PGCPS Principal, Teacher Named Finalists For Regional Educator Awards

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Two Prince George’s County Public Schools staff members have been selected as finalists in the competition for Washington Post Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year awards.

Oxon Hill Elementary principal Dr. Wanda Williams and Thomas G. Pullen Creative and Performing Arts music teacher Thomas Pierre are being recognized.

“Dr. Williams and Mr. Pierre are the standard for excellence in leadership and classroom instruction,” Monica Goldson, chief executive officer of PGCPS, said. “We are so proud to see them recognized among our region’s top educators.”

A 27-year PGCPS educator, Williams began her career as a high school special education teacher in 1995. She has served as a professional school counselor, assistant principal, regional school principal, instructional specialist and area director before her current role as principal of Oxon Hill Elementary.

“My passion for addressing the many needs of my students, their families, my staff and the community as a whole is why I do this work. As a school leader, I ground myself in ensuring the continued academic growth of all children,” Williams said. “Using data as a catalyst in understanding the trajectory of the many components for school success is paramount. I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve in this capacity and I am humbled by this recognition.”

A vocal music and chorus teacher at Thomas G. Pullen K-8 Arts Academy, Pierre has served PGCPS students since 2012. A National Board Certified music teacher, Pierre has been recognized for excellence throughout his career, including being named a Maryland Music Educators Outstanding Music Teacher and recipient of the 2020 CMA National Music Teachers of Excellence National Award.

Outside the classroom, he serves on the boards of the Maryland Music Educators Association and the Middle Atlantic Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association. Pierre is an international presenter and clinician, sharing his expertise workshops on closing the achievement gap through the arts.

“I am honored and elated to be recognized by my school district to be uniquely qualified among outstanding educators to receive this distinguished award,” he said. “Teaching is my gift and calling, and I am committed to students and their learning. I am so blessed to serve the PGCPS community.”
