Police Arrest Person Accused of Killing Elderly Man As He Filled Up Gas Tank in PG County

Police say 20-year-old Demarko Wheeler shot the man and stole his car.

Prince George's County Police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting of an elderly man as he pumped gas in Capitol Heights. Demarko Wheeler, 20, of Southeast D.C. faces charges of first degree murder, second degree murder and other charges, according to a police statement.

Police say Wheeler shot 68-year-old Alonzo Jackson as he filled up his 2015 Dodge Charger at a gas station in the 4900 block of Marlboro Pike and then took off with Jackson's car. Jackson died at the hospital several hours later.

The car was later recovered in the District. A tip from a citizen helped detectives identify Wheeler, who was arrested Sunday in D.C. Currently, he is in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department and awaits extradition to Prince George's County.
