Power Outages, Downed Trees, Flooded Streets Reported After Storms, Game Rescheduled

Widespread power outages, downed trees and flooded streets were reported after a storm hit the area Tuesday. The Baysox game has been moved.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Another storm swept through Prince George's County Tuesday with strong winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightning. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, thousands of residents were without power, according to WTOP,and many more were without power still Wednesdsay. Officials also received numerous reports of trees down and some flood streets.

There is widespread damage to trees and power lines in Bowie, the city posted in an update at 10 p.m. Tuesday. City crews were working to open roads blocked by trees and will be back out in force Wednesday morning after assessing the damage.

BGE crews were working overnight to repair downed power lines and have already restored some areas. There were about 8,000 homes without power in the Bowie area Tuesday evening, the city said.

If your power is out, report it to BGE at 1-800-685-0123 or 1-877-778-2222. Do not assume that they are aware of your outage, officials said.

City officials asked residents to avoid areas where wires are down, trees are blocking roads, or where there is high water.

The National Weather Service had issued a warning about slick roads, downed trees and power outages.

The Bowie Baysox Tuesday game was moved to Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. and Wednesday's originally scheduled game began at 12:05 p.m.

As of Wednesday 4 p.m. the city of Bowie reported the following updates:

Status of road problems:

  • Old Chapel Road – remains closed due to down power pole. BGE is on-site.
  • Traffic signals on MD 197 are all working.
  • MD 197 is closed in both directions at the Bowie Golf Course.
  • Mitchellville Road/Harbour Way traffic signal is out.
  • Media Lane is closed to traffic due to downed tree.

Power outages:

  • As of 3:15 p.m., BGE is reporting approximately 6,200 outages in Bowie.
  • Most shops at Bowie Gateway Center are closed (Target, Michaels, etc.) due to a lack of power

Early voting:

Early voting is taking place Wednesday until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bowie Gymnasium on Northview Drive and at the other early voting centers in the county.
