DISTRICT HEIGHTS, MD — Canela, a pregnant dachshund stolen from the front porch of a District Heights home earlier this month, was found and reunited with her family, according to police.

On March 15, Prince George's County police released doorbell video showing a female suspect walking onto the porch of a home in the 6200 block of Foster Street and taking the 5-year-old dog.

Five days, police announced Canela was dropped off at a pet store on Donnell Drive, where an employee contacted police.

Canela returned home just in time for a special birthday, owner Anthony Velasquez told The Washington Post.

"That's all she wanted for her birthday and for her to get her back on her birthday," Velazquez said of his 11-year-old sister, whose special day coincided with Canela's return. "It's something you read out of a fairy tale."

Authorities are still working to identify the female suspect who took Canela. Police said a second suspect might have also been involved in the theft.

Velasquez told the Post his family has "no complaints" now that Canela is home.

"I just wanted my dog back, my family back, and I got that," Velasquez said.
