Prince George's County Offices Affected By Winter Storm Monday, No Trash Pick Up

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Prince George’s County government will be closed to the public Monday due to the forecasted winter storm. Non-essential employees authorized to telework during inclement weather must report for telework at their normal time; essential employees must report to work on time as directed by their agency; non-telework, non-essential employees will be on administrative leave. City Hall and the Kenhill Center in Bowie opened at noon but other city facilities remain closed due to the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The Prince George’s County Health Department’s COVID-19 vaccination clinics at Prince George’s Community College and Prince George’s County Public School locations will be closed, as will the county’s testing site at the Bunker Hill Fire Station.

Dialysis patients should contact their providers directly for instructions. Prince George’s County Call-A-Bus will be providing dialysis trips previously scheduled for Jan. 3. PGC311 will operate on a normal schedule from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Bulky trash, yard waste and food waste collections will be suspended Monday in the county and have been rescheduled for Tuesday. The landfill will be open for contract haulers but closed to the general public. The Prince George's County Organics Composting Facility in Upper Marlboro has closed due to weather-related conditions, and all yard trim and food scraps collections have been suspended and will resume Jan. 10. Trash collection in Bowie also has been suspended Monday.

Services at the Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill in Upper Marlboro, including the Brown Station Road Drop-off Convenience Center, Household Hazardous Acceptance Site, Electronics Recycling Acceptance Site, scrap tire and appliance disposal sites, and the Missouri Avenue Drop-off Solid Waste Acceptance and Recycling Center in Brandywine are closed Monday.

The early voting center at the Southern Regional Technology & Recreation Complex located at 7007 Bock Road will open at its regular time from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for the County Council District 8 special election.

County residents are reminded to park on the same side of the street to ensure accessibility for the county snowplows. Primary and secondary roads are serviced first so that public safety and emergency vehicles can travel. Also, wait 48 hours after the snowfall has ended before reporting concerns about untreated roadways to 3-1-1.

In the city of Bowie, residents are to abide by the following:

• When the snowfall is less than two inches, only main drives, hills and collector roads are treated.
• When snowfall is greater than two inches, as is expected with Monday's storm, all streets will be plowed/treated, beginning with the most heavily traveled roads and progressing through to side streets and cul-de-sacs. Until main thoroughfares are passable, crews will not move to side streets.
• Cars must be moved off the street and into driveways when snow reaches two inches so that plows can clear the streets most efficiently.
• Clearing sidewalks in front of homes is the responsibility of the resident and must be done within 48 hours of the snowfall ending.

During and after a storm, dangerous road conditions on city roads can be reported to the public works department on weekdays between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at 301-809-2344. After business hours and on weekends, dangerous conditions can be reported to the Bowie Police Department Call Center at 240-544-5700.

City crews plow streets that are maintained by the city of Bowie. The Maryland State Highway Administration takes care of highways and numbered routes (50, 3, 301, 564, 450, 197, etc.). Prince George’s County maintains Race Track Road, Church Road and Mitchellville Road.
