Prince George's County Schools Make Weather Decision For Jan. 14

BREAKING: Prince George's County Public Schools are changing schedules after heavy snow with more on the way.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — With forecasts calling for snowy roads much of Sunday and hazardous weather conditions expected overnight and into the morning, Prince George's County Public Schools is canceling activities for Monday, Jan. 14.

The school system said in a Sunday email:

Monday, January 14, 2019 - Code Yellow - Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) – Schools and offices are closed. EMERGENCY PERSONNEL only must report to work.

Snow accumulations so far have ranged from 4 to 6 inches in the county, according to the National Weather Service, and 2 to 4 more inches are possible before the storm ends Sunday night.

  • 6 inches, Largo, 7:45 a.m.; trained spotter
  • 5.8 inches, Upper Marlboro, 9:08 a.m.; trained spotter
  • 5.8 inches, Marlton, 7:30 a.m.; trained spotter
  • 5.6 inches, Greenbelt, 9 a.m.; CoCoRaHS
  • 4 inches, University Park, 3:39 a.m.; National Weather Service office

Here are tips for driving in winter weather conditions, provided by AAA:

  • Never run a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).
  • Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.
