Speed Trap Nets 875 Tickets In MoCo, Prince George's: Police

Police said they gave 875 tickets and arrested 19 people during a six-month blitz against speeding in Montgomery and Prince George's.

MARYLAND — Police said they gave nearly 900 tickets and arrested almost 20 people during a six-month blitz to combat excessive speeding. The multi-phase initiative focused on the Montgomery and Prince George's County sections of Interstate 495, officers clarified.

Authorities mentioned that the last of the six operations took place on Aug. 17. Troopers indicated that the final stint netted:

  • 155 warnings
  • 149 tickets
  • 34 safety equipment repair orders
  • 12 traffic stops alleging violations of Maryland's move-over law
  • Three warrant arrests
  • One criminal arrest

  • 875 tickets
  • 803 warnings
  • 43 safety equipment repair orders
  • 41 move-over warnings
  • 11 drug arrests
  • Eight warrant arrests
  • Six move-over tickets

Police noted that a high volume of collisions prompted the crackdown. An incident report added that 2020 crash records showed more than 9,700 accidents in Montgomery County and at least 17,100 wrecks in Prince George’s County.

Officers informed that the coronavirus pandemic reduced overall traffic but increased the presence of "super speeders." Authorities wrote that they conducted multiple stings to address these drivers. The press release also suggested that other data-driven efforts are on the way in the coming months.

The Maryland State Police shared that 137 troopers orchestrated these plans with the support of the Montgomery County Police Department, the Prince George’s County Police Department and the Virginia State Police.
