CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD — The suspect wanted in a February fatal shooting has been arrested in Colorado, authorities report. Jabari McCoy, 30, of Capitol Heights has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of 45-year-old David Downs of Capitol Heights. On Feb. 23 around 11:20 a.m., Prince George's police officers were called to the 5200 block of Marlboro Pike. They found Downs with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Detectives identified McCoy as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Members of the PGPD's Fugitive Unit, which is part of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, determined McCoy was in Colorado. With the assistance of a U.S. Marshals Service Task Force in Colorado, he was taken into custody Monday. The preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect and victim knew each other. Detectives believe the shooting stemmed from an argument. The suspect is charged with first- and second-degree murder and related charges. McCoy remains in Colorado pending extradition to Prince George's County.

Maryland Special Secretary of Overdose Response Emily Keller to deliver special remarks
BOWIE, MD — August 25, 2026 — Bryce’s Treehouse, a Prince George’s County-based nonprofit founded in memory of Bryce Jackson, who died from fentanyl poisoning at age 17 in June 2023, will host its inaugural International Overdose Awareness Day community event on Sunday, August 30, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. at the Kenhill Center, 2614 Kenhill Drive, Bowie, Maryland.
The free community gathering will bring together families, people in recovery, behavioral health and recovery professionals, harm reduction advocates, community organizations, and state and local leaders for an afternoon centered on remembrance, education, healing, recovery, hope, and action.
Maryland Special Secretary of Overdose Response Emily Keller will deliver special remarks addressing the current overdose crisis in Maryland, ongoing response efforts, and how communities can help move the work forward.
The afternoon will feature a community resource fair; naloxone education and distribution; Truth Pharm’s Trail of Truth memorial tombstones and community tombstone painting; Remembrance Trees; conversations addressing grief, stigma, substance use disorder, recovery, prevention, and community solutions; and a closing Memorial Candlelight Ceremony.
Tracie Gardner, Executive Director of the National Black Harm Reduction Network, will moderate the panel conversations, bringing together lived experience, family perspectives, behavioral health and recovery professionals, advocates, and community leaders.
“This gathering is about creating the kind of space I wish my family and I had known existed when we needed it—one where people can find information and resources, talk honestly about substance use disorder, remember the people we have lost, support those still struggling, and see that recovery and hope are possible,” said Kimberly Douglas, Founding Director of Bryce’s Treehouse. “We cannot bring back the people we have lost, but we can honor them by helping save lives and making sure other families do not have to navigate this alone.”
The event will conclude with a candlelight ceremony to remember those lost, stand with individuals experiencing substance use disorder and the families who love them, and celebrate those walking the path of recovery as National Recovery Month begins in September.

Teen Time is a time and place for homeschooled teens to come together to learn socially. Every class is different as it is customized to the needs of the students in attendance. Project -based learning, integrations and student-driven activities are leveraged to motivate students to improve skills they need help with and to challenge students' strengths.Our well-known homeschool tutorial provides an original curriculum that is customized to each group of enrolled students each semester. We first get to know you and your student(s) and then work to find the what and how that works best for this collection of human beings. Our strategies are highly interactive, play-based, art-integrated and often project-based. We craft an experience based on your student without leaving your student to drive instruction on their own. Each 3-hour session weaves a combination of skills across academic subjects (including "specials") into activities. We send home work samples and walk parents through what we did, encouraging you to take pictures, ask questions, and make requests. Rather than organizing based on age, we organize based on minimum skills and then provide open-ended activities that allow each student to engage on the level they are working at. Tutorial is offered twice per week. Join us for either day or both. You will get a different experience on each day.
