Suspect Sentenced In Clinton Bank Robberies

CLINTON, MD — The suspect charged in the armed robbery of two Clinton banks three different times in 2024 has pleaded guilty and been sentenced.

William Monroe has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, suspending all but 12 years, after pleading guilty to three counts of armed robbery after he went into two banks in Clinton on three separate occasions in November 2024 and December 2024. Police say Monroe used demand notes each time he entered the bank and threatened the tellers with a gun.

In November 2024, Monroe went into the Truist Bank in Clinton and went up to a bank employee, passed her a note demanding $25,000 and stated that he had a gun. According to the bank teller, she feared for her life and the safety of others, so she complied with Monroe's demands and gave him $1,060 in bank funds, police said.

In December 2024, Monroe robbed the TD Bank and Truist Bank in Clinton in the same way. During the TD Bank robbery, Monroe stole approximately $585 in bank funds then he stole approximately $1,000 during the second robbery of the Truist Bank, according to Prince George's Police.

Detectives obtained surveillance footage from the robberies and latent fingerprints recovered from the demand notes were later identified as belonging to Monroe, prosecutors noted.
