Tennis Star, Hyattsville Native Frances Tiafoe Loses In U.S. Open Semifinals

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Hyattsville native Frances Tiafoe, 28, fell short from advancing in the U.S. Open final this past weekend.

Tiafoe lost to Ben Shelton in the semifinals Friday 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, according to US Open.

Tiafoe, the 11th seed, has reached the semifinals at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center three times now, first in 2022, then in 2024 and again Friday night.

The Prince Georgian native also is one of only three men with 40 or more tour-level wins this season, along with Alexander Zverev and Jannik Skinner. Earlier this summer, he won the biggest title of his career, an ATP 500 trophy on grass in Halle. Last month, he played his way into his second ATP Masters 1000 final in Cincinnati.

“Ultimately, I want to do the thing, man,” said Tiafoe, who was making his 12th straight U.S. Open main-draw appearance. “I want to be a Grand Slam champion one day and just get back to the drawing board and keep working. I’ll continue what I've been doing all year, just continue to work. I just fell in love with the work. I’m going to feel sorry for myself the next couple of days, but after that, I can start working again and get my a** to Turin. I want to be there.”
