Traffic Problems Ahead: Authorities Shut Down Lanes of US 1 in PG County
A major drainage improvement project is underway, and that means headaches for commuters into late August.
Attention, Prince George's County commuters: authorities will be shutting down lanes of traffic on Route 1 for the next month or so.
The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration is conducting a major drainage improvement project on U.S. Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) in Laurel, and the last part of the project began this past Thursday night, July 14, according to a statement.
Crews have begun final resurfacing for this project and, as a result, one lane in each direction of U.S. 1 between Ammendale Road and Ritz Way will be closed Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. each morning for the next few weeks.

Just because you aren't commuting at those times doesn't mean you're safe from inconvenience -- the statement goes on to note that crews may have to close a single lane on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at times over the course of the project, which is expected to stretched into late August.
The work is being done to reduce water flowing incidents in the region. The project is expected to cost $10 million.
