Traffic Signals Malfunction, Sports Practices Canceled After Storms Roar Through Prince George's

Officials report traffic signals aren't working and Prince George's Schools have canceled sports practices, games after storms roll through.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — An early morning storm that rolled through the area has left many people, schools and businesses without power, and downed trees are causing challenges.

Traffic signal are malfunctioning in Bowie due to the early morning storm, according to officials. Signals are not working at the intersections of Collington Road (MD 197) and U.S. 301, Mitchellville Road and Evergreen Parkway. The signal at Collington Road (MD 197) and U.S. Route 50 is flashing.

"The utility company has been notified and is working to fix the issue. There is currently no estimated time for when the signals will be restored," Bowie city officials stated.

The M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County currently is assessing damage to parks, trails and recreational facilities. For now, certain parks and facilities are closed to ensure public safety and allow staff to conduct inspections, cleanup and repairs.

A boy was rescued and taken to a hospital for evaluation after a large tree fell onto a home in Kettering early Friday morning, trapping him inside. Emergency crews had to extricate the boy from the home.

The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department said crews were called around 12:04 a.m. to the home located in the 300 block of Wren Court for a reported collapse. Firefighters found a large tree that had fallen onto a single-family home, damaging the roof and a bedroom.

All PGCPS buildings are closed Friday, too. All athletic practices and games are canceled for today and will be rescheduled. There is no transportation for non-public schools except pickup for Maryland School for the Blind and Maryland School for the Deaf.
