Two People Killed In Crash With Semi On U.S. Route 301

Two people died Monday shortly before midnight when their vehicle crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on U.S. Route 301, police say.

BRANDYWINE, MD — Maryland State Police are investigating a two-vehicle double fatal crash that happened shortly before midnight Monday in Prince George’s County.

Around 11:58 p.m. Monday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Forestville Barrack were called southbound U.S. Route 301 at Brandywine Road for a report of a two-vehicle crash. According to a preliminary investigation, a Nissan Maxima and a Freightliner tractor-trailer were both traveling southbound on Route 301 when, for unknown reasons, the Nissan hit the rear of the semi.

The driver of the Nissan Maxima, identified as Douglas Orlando Smith, 39, of Brandywine, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, whose identification is being withheld pending next of kin notification, also was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of a Freightliner tractor-trailer was reportedly uninjured in the crash, according to Maryland State Police.

Lanes were closed for approximately five hours for the crash investigation. The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to lead the active and ongoing investigation.
