Vacant Seat Filled On Prince George's County Board Of Education

The vacant seat left on the Prince George's County Board of Education has been filled with an appointment by County Executive Alsobrooks.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A public affairs consultant has been appointed to fill a vacant position on the Prince George's County Board of Education.

Walter L. Fields has assumed the seat previously filled by Paul Monteiro who has taken a position within the Biden administration.

“We are proud to welcome Mr. Walter Fields to the Prince George’s County Board of Education, and we are excited to work with him as we continue to move our school system forward,” said County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “Mr. Fields’ work on social justice and advancing diversity and inclusion in institutional settings, as well as his advocacy for educational equity at the local and state level, will make him a strong addition to our school board.”

Fields currently is the principal of Fields Communications where he represents a diverse roster of public and private sector clients and interests as a public affairs consultant. This role includes serving as a consultant to the National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities in the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University, designing the center’s parent and family engagement initiative.

Prior to this, Fields held various public affairs roles with the Community Service Society of New York and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association. He has been involved in campaigns to preserve the civil justice system, assist families of the incarcerated to preserve familial ties, promote violence reduction between African American youth, build alliances across diverse communities, close the racial achievement gap in public education and protect voting rights.

Fields also currently is co-chairperson of Strong Schools Maryland, a statewide education equity advocacy organization. Prior to relocating to Maryland, he was the founder and chairman of the Black Parents Workshop, Inc., a parents advocacy organization based in South Orange-Maplewood, New Jersey. He has been an adjunct professor in political science at Montclair State University and a visiting lecturer in public policy at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Morgan State University. He also holds a master of public administration degree from New York University, as well as a professional certificate in not-for-profit management. Finally, he holds a master of arts degree in political science with a concentration in American government from the City University of New York, where his thesis focused on Black parental engagement in suburban school districts.
