Where Domestic Violence Victims Can Find Help

Last week's murder of Gladys Tordil, a mother and teacher whom police say was killed by her estranged husband, has the community asking how to stop domestic violence.

While various agencies are examining how to combat such deaths, there are shelters, emergency hotlines and experts available 24/7 to help anyone in danger.

The Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence supports phone lines answered 24/7 by trained volunteers who can help domestic violence victims plan a safe escape from their home, if needed, or find a bed in an emergency shelter if they have nowhere to stay.

Each county in Maryland has a domestic violence program where victims can turn for help. In Prince George’s County, that resource is the Family Crisis Center of Prince George’s County, Inc.; its hotline number is 301-731-1203. The center offers myriad services, including a 24-hour hotline, access to shelter, counseling services, and advocacy. All communications with the center are confidential and you can remain anonymous.

A link on the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence website shows the resources available in every county to put victims in touch with local sources of help.

Or you can reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (that’s 1-800-799-7233) 24 hours a day. Their TTY number for hearing-impaired persons is 1-800-787-3224.
