Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. It also cares for thousands of acres of land, encompassing community parks, greenways, archaeological sites, environmental and historical preserves, and large regional parks spanning several hundred acres. Alan Pastrana, a longtime fixture at , attended a retirement party in his honor recently at . Pastrana had been at AACC since 1970. The year before, he played professional football for the Denver Broncos, but his career was cut short by a knee injury, according to a press release from the college. He went on to coach football for 20 years and lacrosse for 32 years at AACC in Arnold. He retired in June after 40 years of service as a teacher, coach and mentor to AACC students and athletes, according to the release. In May, Pastrana was inducted into the community college's Pioneer Athletic Hall of Fame. On Aug. 14, Pastrana was honored at a retirement party hosted by faculty and friends from AACC. He formally turned in his keys and ended his long service to the community.
