AACC Students Create Day of Remembrance Display with Sugar Skulls

Students at Anne Arundel Community College decorate sugar skulls as part of a project for Día de los Muertos.

A new cultural display at (AACC) recognizes the Mexican holiday “Día de los Muertos,” which is often translated as "day of the dead."

Thomas Wayne Edison, associate professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of World Languages at AACC, said the holiday is a "day of remembrance" and explained in an email to Patch that the colorful sugar skulls are a popular part of the celebration.

The department currently sponsors a Día de los Muertos altar display featuring sugar skulls finished by students. The sugar skulls serve as the centerpiece in Mexican memorial altars and Edison explained that the altars are "dedicated to the lives of departed loved ones (family members, pets or celebrities)."
