Barret's Blast Beats Arundel, 1-0

After 86-plus minutes of scoreless soccer, senior Loic Barret wins it for the Bruins with an overtime goal. In girls soccer action, the Lady Bruins defeated Arundel, 3-1, and Sammy Dean scored twice.

GAMBRILLS—The boys' soccer team (4-0) doesn't give up.

"Never give up. We're not allowed to," senior goalie said.

Niedermeier and the Bruins pulled out another close victory on Thursday, defeated Arundel (2-2) in extra time, 1-0. Senior Loic Barret scored the golden goal six minutes and 40 seconds into the first overtime to seal the win.

"We work hard until the end whistle," Barret said about his team's mentality.

"We're just kind of scratching the surface on how good we could be eventually," Tettemer said. "We know we've got a long way to go to improve and it's just good to see that hard work and get some results in the end."

The Bruins' best option in the first half was an unlikely canidate. Senior defender David Keen hit a pair of free kicks over the cross bar to give Arundel a scare.

In a span of less than two minutes, the Wildcats earned two corner kicks that were both connected with, but were unable to beat Niedermeier for a score.

"Broadneck is an incredible side," Arundel goalie Tyler Wilson said. "I knew it was going to be difficult for us to put away our chances and it was."

The two sides went to halftime still searching for a goal.

Broadneck began the second half with another test for Wilson. Barret fired a shot directed at the keeper, his shot was saved.

Later, a Brandon Hanger header was batted down by Wilson. Welsh the let loose a long-range shot that was tipped over the crossbar.

With no one able to score, the game headed for sudden-death overtime.

During the first overtime period, a Broadneck throw-in found its way to freshman Tyler Gabbara, whose shot was stopped and landed at the feet of Barret. The senior forward struck a low, hard shot back across the goal to secure the victory.

"Tyler got to it and hit a shot and it deflected. It bounced to me and I put it away," Barret said.

The Bruins will host on Monday at 5 p.m.

Dean's Two Goals Guide Lady Bruins Past Arundel, 3-1 

Senior Sammy Dean scored twice against Arundel on Thursday, as Broadneck (4-0) walked away with a 3-1 victory.

Along with Dean's two scores, sophomore Arden Smith added a first-half goal for the visiting Bruins.

"I thought we played really hard. Arundel is definitely a really good team. We came out determined to 'stick it to them' and we played hard the entire time," Dean said.

Kacey McDowell nearly gave Broadneck an early lead when she found herself one-on-one with the Arundel goalie, but the senior striker was wide of the upper corner of the goal with her shot.

A foul in the box by Arundel allowed Dean a chance to convert from the spot. She stepped up and calmly placed a hard shot to the low left corner, giving the Lady Bruins a 1-0 advantage.

"She's all over the place. She and Nikole [Blackwell], they win everything. They're around the ball all the time. They're great in the air. They're tenacious. They're very good," Broadneck coach John Camm said.

Smith would double the Bruin lead when she cleaned up a deflected shot and placed it in the back of the net, as the first half neared its end.

With 17 minutes to play in the second half, Broadneck's Emily Lord took a dribble run down the left side of the field. She cut back on her defender before heading towards goal, where she dropped off a square pass to Dean for the 3-0 lead.

Frantic to draw the score closer, Arundel kicked up the intensity and capitalized on Carley Keer goal.

"We might have lost but the start and I think the finish show what can we can end up being," Keer said.

The Lady Wildcats looked strong toward the end, but was unable to put together the complete game.

Broadneck plays at 7 p.m. on Monday, hosting Northeast High.
