Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. It also cares for thousands of acres of land, encompassing community parks, greenways, archaeological sites, environmental and historical preserves, and large regional parks spanning several hundred acres. The inner fabric of life on the peninsula was shaken to its core Monday afternoon. It was the news that spread faster than the thicket of bamboo in my side yard.  The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Navy</a> announced Monday that the annual <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_show" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">air show</a>, which is a staple in the yearly commencement activities at the <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=38.98443,-76.48888&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=38.98443,-76.48888%20%28United%20States%20Naval%20Academy%29&amp;t=h" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">US Naval Academy</a>, was cancelled. What in the world are all our children going to do on Wednesday afternoon  now?  Today's photo was captured while my son was at USNA Lacrosse Camp last summer.  It's the Blue Angel on display outside the Navy Stadium.  I had planned for this to be Wednesday's photo in keeping with the scheduled air show.  However, with the news of the cancellation, I decided to post the photo today.  In other news, the plebes scaled a well-greased Herndon monument in 2 hours 41 minutes today; so glad they brought back the lard. The Blue Angels will be missed, but congrats class of 2011. Enjoy commissioning week everyone. Beat Army! (as if it's really a contest)

The annual Purcellville Wine and Food Festival returns on Saturday, July 18, in Dillon’s Woods at the historic Fireman’s Field Complex (250 S. Nursery Avenue, Purcellville). The festival will take place from 2 to 8 p.m., inviting guests to gather with family and friends for an afternoon and evening of local wine, beer, food, live music, art, and more.
This year’s event will showcase 40 vendors, including wineries, breweries, food and snack vendors, and local exhibitors. Enjoy live music performances by the Rick Reaves Band, The Darby Brothers, and the Franklin Park Big Band. The “Arts in the Garden” section, hosted by the Purcellville Arts Council, will highlight local artists who will create works of art live on-site. Additional activities include face painting and a photo stand-in booth. 
Early bird ticket pricing is available through 5 p.m. on July 17: 
• Early bird admission (ages 17 and over): $5 (+ tax) 
• Early bird drink tickets (6 oz wine or 12 oz beer): $8.50 (+ tax) 
• Early bird drink ticket package: 4 tickets for $32 (+ tax) 
• Early bird bottle of wine purchase: $35 (+ tax), available from participating wineries (bottles must be consumed on-site)
A souvenir glass will be provided with the purchase of the first drink ticket. Save time and money by purchasing your tickets in advance. 
The popular VIP experience returns for $275 (+ tax) and includes admission for six, a reserved table for six, three bottles of local wine, six souvenir glasses, six drink tickets, early entry to the festival, special commemorative gifts, and a selection of sweets and savories for the table.
