Create a Healthy, Balanced Lifestyle

small, livable changes can net big results!

Developing a healthy, balanced lifestyle is critical to maintaining good health and happiness throughout your life.  Most of us have an idea of the types of things that are good for us, but sometimes when we decide to make an improvement we go overboard making drastic, unrealistic changes that we are unable to sustain.  A better approach is gently making small, livable changes that you will be able to maintain throughout your life.  Here are a few ideas to get you started!

  • Sleep—Aim for 8 hours of sleep per night and try to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same times which will help your body stay in a healthy rhythm.
  • Hydration—Opt for water frequently instead of high sugar and caffeinated beverages.
  • Nutrition—Reduce sugar and carbohydrates (starches like bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, cereals, etc.) consumption.  This change doesn’t have to be dramatic, just think smaller portions of starch and larger portions of veggies as well as reducing your sugar intake by saving sweets for special occasions.
  • Exercise—Incorporate a little more exercise each day.  Walking is one of the very best exercises; it is low-impact, effective as well as free.  Begin by parking a little farther from your destination and by taking the stairs when you can.  Planning walks with friends is a healthy way to catch up.  A little strength training and stretching are also good ideas to keep you strong and flexible.  Begin any exercise routine slowly and gently, working your way up as your body adapts.
  • Relaxation—Learn to relax.  Relaxation is one of the very best things you can do for your body, mind and spirit!  The most basic (and highly effective) stress management technique is deep breathing.  When stressed we breathe shallowly and rapidly signaling the body to go into its stress response.  By initiating slow, deep breaths we counteract this and, instead, signal the body to go into its healthy relaxation response.  An added bonus . . . it can be done anytime, anywhere!
  • Positivity—Develop a more positive attitude.  Positivity is a key ingredient of a healthy lifestyle.  Begin by choosing to be more optimistic, appreciating things that are already going well and letting go of worrisome thoughts.

While these suggestions are healthy for most people, be sure to check with your physician before beginning any nutrition or exercise program to be sure that it is right for you.  For more information on stress management and developing a healthier, more balanced lifestyle, please visit us at www.tranquilitybaywellness.com.
