Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. It also cares for thousands of acres of land, encompassing community parks, greenways, archaeological sites, environmental and historical preserves, and large regional parks spanning several hundred acres. Its mission is to create opportunities that allow individuals to enjoy life, explore nature, and restore their health and well-being. The boys varsity soccer team of ranked among 350 schools recently honored with a <a href="http://www.nscaa.com/news/2011/11/2011-nscaa-high-school-team-academic-award-winners-announced" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">National Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 school year</a> by the <a href="http://www.nscaa.com" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">National Soccer Coaches Association of America</a>. "This is the ninth consecutive year that we have won this award," wrote coach Sean Tettemer in an email to Patch. The team earned an average GPA of 3.89, according to the NSCAA. To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum average GPA of 3.25 for the entire year. While there were other teams on the list from Maryland, Broadneck was the only school listed in Anne Arundel County. Nationally, 135 boys teams and 215 girls teams received the honor.
