Broadneck High School Shows Off Musical Skill
With the holidays drawing near, Broadneck High School succeeds in putting the peninsula in a festive mood with its winter band and orchestra concert.
With trumpet blasts and violin melodies, Broadneck High School's band and orchestra took the stage this past Tuesday, aiming to put all of those attending in the holiday mood.
Directed by orchestra instructor and teacher Sandra Balderson, Broadneck's orchestra played first, with a collection of classical and current pieces.

"I really thought they did beautifully, just absolutely outstanding," Balderson said. "Everything was in tune and it sounded great".
Accompanying the Broadneck orchestral students was a collection of brass instruments, several of which were actually hand-selected by Balderson and band director Matt Heist.

This group eventually grew to include both Broadneck teacher Scott Rundle on the trumpet and Glen Burnie alum Daniel Eldred on the tuba.
Directly following this segment of the performance, Heist and his band took the stage, playing a series of eloquent and festive pieces, including a rousing rendition of David Holsinger’s well-known piece "On a Hymnsong of Philip Blis."
"I thought it was a fantastic concert," said Broadneck senior and trumpet player Ted Gabor. "I love the band, and Mr. Heist is an absolutely amazing director, so I had pretty high hopes going into the concert."
Although this concert marks the last one before the spring concert in March, plans are underway for a new set list and rehearsal schedules for the upcoming months.
"We're going to get started right away," Balderson said. "I'm glad we did well for this concert, but now it's time to start focusing on the next one".
