But in the end, Montgomery County schools triumphed over the leaderboards.

"It was an eye-opener for Anne Arundel County swimmers," Winans said. "It is awesome to see that caliber of Montgomery County swimming."

The participation and eligibility requirements followed by Montgomery County are a little different than Anne Arundel County's, and other county schools, Winans said. They apparently don't have to attend all practices other schools do.

Some swimmers toldΒ The CapitalΒ that they weren't too fond of Montgomery County schools competing in the same league as them.

In an email with Patch, Winans explained the practice rule by saying it's important for everyone to participate on the same level.

"We, and all of the teams in the county, lose a lot of club kids every year because of the time involved," Winans wrote. "We want all swimmers to truly experience the 'high school team' experience as it was meant to be: Practicing together, supporting each other and having excellent swims for the benefit of their HS teams and counties."
