Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. It also cares for thousands of acres of land, encompassing community parks, greenways, archaeological sites, environmental and historical preserves, and large regional parks spanning several hundred acres. Delegate Cathy Vitale (R-District 33A) was appointed this week to serve on Governor Martin O'Malley's Family Violence Council The council works to serve Maryland families in determining how to best overcome domestic violence. "I am pleased to be given this opportunity," Vitale said in a release. "Domestic violence is a serious problem in Maryland. It's effects on families and particularly children can have long lasting negative implications as they group up and form their own families."  Vitale resides in Severna Park and blogs regularly for the Severna Park Patch. She will be one of four state legislators to serve on the council along with other cabinet officials and members of the public. The council aims to study situations resulting from domestic violence and find ways to resolve these issues and make Maryland families safer.  "It is my hope that both my legislative and legal experience helps bring real change to current situations," she said in the release.
