Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks serves millions of residents and visitors annually through a wide variety of services and programs. Its primary focus is to provide comprehensive recreational programs for residents and safeguard valuable land through the maintenance and management of over 160 parks and natural areas. The department manages specialized recreational facilities, including two swim centers, two golf courses, three ice rinks, a baseball stadium, a softball complex, and programs tailored to diverse needs ranging from school-age childcare to adaptive recreation. A family cleaning out the house of a relative who had passed away found a surprising item on Wednesday—an in-tact grenade. Family members were at the house at 1813 St. Margaret's Dr. when they came across the device in a drawer, according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Steve Thompson. They called 911 to report the device around 12:30 p.m. and fire department officials came to investigate.  Fire department personnel took photos of the device and sent them to the Department of Defense, where the device was determined to be a World War II-era Japanese grenade with the pin in tact.  Because the device still had the potential to explode, the Annapolis City Bomb Squad was called. Members of the bomb squad transported the device to , where they rendered it safe. "The family did exactly the right thing," Thompson said. "They didn't touch it. They just called 911 and let us deal with it. Sometimes with these old devices, even just jostling it could cause it to explode."
