Students Enjoy Movie Night at Cape St. Claire Elementary

This fundraising event is always popular for the school and attracted a large crowd despite wet weather on Friday night.

Even Friday’s driving rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of students, who arrived at the semi-annual event carrying pillows and blankets to watch a movie. Organized as a fundraising event by the CSC PTO, the featured movie was Rio, an animated story of an endangered blue macaw who travels with his owner from Minnesota to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

PTO volunteers cooked and served hot dogs, popcorn, chips, candy and drinks while students and their parents turned the school’s cafeteria into a sea of cozy temporary beds. The movie was shown on the school’s large projection screen to the approximately 160 people in attendance.

For PTO board member Geralyn Valente, this year is her last turn after seven years of spearheading the fundraiser.

“Movie night been around for about 20 years and has always been very popular,” she said. “Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t always cooperated and, during my time here, we have only ever once managed to hold it outside on the basketball courts.”

Still, movie night remains a successful means of raising money for the PTO, with the entire $2.50 admission price going directly to programs for the children and the school.

The next PTO event is the ice cream social on Friday, Oct. 14, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and will include sweet treats and a carnival atmosphere of games and prizes.
